In Japan, you can enjoy a wide variety of food. One genre of dishes is Yoshoku which literally means western dish but strictly speaking it is not western.
Japan started modernization, westernization and industrialization in 1868 when the new government was formed with the emperor Meiji at its head after the samurai government returned the political power to the emperor. People's way of lives changed drastically in various aspects like school system, clothes and food. Until then, people had not eaten meat because of Buddhist prohibition. In the new era, they started eating beef and pork. A dish named Tonkatsu is pork cutlet. Another dish named Sukiyaki is a hot pot dish of beef and other ingredients. They have long been popular and common dishes on Japanese dining tables. The photo of the title is Omuraisu in Japanese. It is omelet containing fried rice and also popular one.
You can find many Yoshoku restaurants all over Japan. There are some favorite ones for me in or around Tokyo. Shall we go and eat out together to such a casual restaurant? There are so many choices other than Tonkatsu, Sukiyaki and Omuraisu. I would like to guide you about that.
That Tonkatsu restaurant is in an office building of the downtown in Tokyo.
