On the third Monday of July, tomorrow, we are on a national holiday called Marine Day when we thank the Sea for giving the blessings to us and celebrate the prosperity as Maritime Nation. The national land area of Japan is 380,000 km² which is the 61st largest in the world and a little smaller than the State of California in the US. However, Japan has a vast area of EEZ(Exclusive Ecomomic Zone) across the surrounding Sea. Total area of Japan including the land and EEZ covers 4,470,000 km² which is the 6th largest in the world as Island Nation. Every year, around this holiday, rainy season is over in or around Tokyo and then the swimming season in the sea begins. Throughout the year, Shonan area near Tokyo is a popular place where people go surfing, fishing and sailing.
Some surfers are seen near the beach. A little faraway, Enoshima Island is located. It is well known for one of the biggest yacht harbors in Japan and the venues of sailing events both in 1964 and 2020 Summer Olympics.
