Subsription Concert in the Morning


♬The prestigious college of music presents great performance in Ueno.♫

Here we are in front of a hall of Tokyo University of the Arts which consists of the faculty of fine arts and the faculty of music. Today we are enjoying listening to two concertos played by excellent students soloists and The Geidai(the common name of the university for short) Philharmonia Orchestra. The start of the performance is at 11:00 a.m.

It was established in 1887 as Tokyo Academy of Music. Do you know the film titled "The Last Emperor"? The film music in that movie was composed by a world-famous Japanese musician and an actor, Ryuichi Sakamoto(1952-2023) who graduated from graduate school of The Geidai.
In the campus of the faculty
As we see, bronze statues of two great composers, Ludwig van Beethoven and Frederic Chopin were erected. The 5th Symphony by Beethoven was performed for the first time in Japan by Tokyo Academy of Music in 1918.

We have tickets which were bought in advance. They are reasonably priced at 1,500 yen(about 10 USD) and all seats are reserved. Morning subscription concerts are held 13 times a Japanese academic year(April-March) usually on Thursdays. 
We are having seats.
Today, the program as follows: I Trumpet Concerto composed by Joseph Haydn, Ⅱ Piano Concerto No. 4 composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. I listened to the violin concerto of Tchaikovsky and the piano concerto No. 2 of Rachmaninov in the past morning concerts.
The old concert hall of the faculty
Today's concert hall was built in 1998. That old concert hall, which was originally built in 1890, was removed and reconstructed in Ueno Park in 1987. The hall is still used for concerts. 
A Great Composer near the old concert hall
His name is Rentaro Taki(1879-1903) graduated from Tokyo Academy of Music and furthermore studied at University of Music and Theatre Leipzig. He composed many songs all of which are still loved by Japanese people. The melody of one of his songs comes on at the departure in Metro subway station of Asakusa.
