Restoration of Jomon village in Aomori Prefecture

The word, Jomon literally means 'cord mark' which American zoologist, Edward Sylvester Morse named from the pattern on potteries excavated from Shell Mounds of Omori which was discovered by him in the Omori district in Tokyo in 1877. Jomon potteries are chracterized by cord mark. Subsequently, the time during which Jomon potteries had been used has become Jomon Period.

The Jomon potteries were used to boil food like nuts.

Dr. Morse is holding the Jomon pottery.

People in Jomon Period were hunter-gatherer. We believe Jomon people more peacefully lived than people lived in the next Yayoi Period when they started and developed rice cultivation. Since development of rice cultivation caused food surpluses and scarcity depending on the communities, each village of Yayoi people often fighted each other to plunder food and other possession.

Jomon People were living peacefully.

The dad in a Jomon family spoke cheerfully.
Hey ! I caught a nice salmon. Tonight we have a quite a treat, don't we ?
