Ieyasu Tokugawa(1542-1616) succeeded in unifying Japan after a fierce battle and delegated by the Emperor to the leader of samurai, Shogun in 1603. Since then, successive Tokugawa Shoguns ruled Japan based in Edo castle for about 260 years. The castle is now the Imperial Palace Grounds. It is no exaggeration to say that today's Tokyo started to be formed more than 400 years ago.
The first shogun of Tokugawa military government, Ieyasu Tokugawa was a thoughtful leader and great man.
Nihombashi is a bridge(the photo in the title) which was built in 1911 and designated as the Important Cultural Property, and also the name of the district around the bridge. By the bridge of the nothern end, we see the post of sign.
On the sign, it reads 'mile zero or the starting point of highways in Tokyo'. Even today, Nihombashi is mile zero of five highways in Japan. The Shogun also gave an order to set up milestones on those highways. We see the two remains of milestones in Tokyo. On Octorber 7, 2024
